The Little Theater, York College Performing Arts Center
94-20 Guy R. Brewer Boulevard, Jamaica, NY Suggested donation: $10.00 Suitable for adults and children over the age of 6 In recognition of the ensemble’s South American origins, the Quintet of the Americas will perform music from Colombia, Cuba, Peru and Brazil. Local composer Gaudencio Thiago de Mello, of Forest Hills, Queens, will be represented with a lovely lullaby about sleeping in a hammock! The Quintet of the Americas is excited to present a hauntingly beautiful and unusual work, The Soul, by Native American composer Louis Ballard. Dr. Ballard (1931-2007), of Quapaw-Cherokee descent, combined Native American instruments, melodies, and rhythms with mainstream western compositional techniques. The Soul, which is based on an Eskimo funeral melody, features WIIKIZHO, a hand carved wooden Sioux courtship flute. This compelling program also includes salsa, gospel, and early jazz by Cuban composer Paquito D'Rivera and African American composers James P. Johnson, William Grant Still and Carl MaultsBy; George Gershwin’s Summertime; Leonard Bernstein's Overture to Candide; and Samuel Barber’s Summer Music, a masterpiece by one of America’s greatest lyrical composers. Overture to Candide - Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) |
